His name is <strong>Eric D\u00edaz<\/strong>, from Joviat hospitality school (Barcelona) and he is the winner of the Catalan Young Chef Contest (<a href=\"http:\/\/santpol.edu.es\/ca\/home\/presentacio\/concurs-cuina-jove-de-catalunya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Concurs Cuina Jove de Catalunya<\/em><\/a>) held in its 32<sup>nd<\/sup> edition on 25 April 2018 at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/santpol.edu.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University College\u00a0of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts<\/a> (EUHTStPOL), in Sant Pol de Mar, Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The jury was particularly impressed by his dish <em>Pollastre a la Manresaneta<\/em> (Chicken cooked in the Manresa\u2019s Way) through which he excellently interpreted the theme of the competition <em>Innovating Traditional Cuisine<\/em>. In particular, the panel appreciated Eric\u2019s storytelling about his recipe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President of <a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IGCAT<\/a>, <strong>Dr. Diane Dodd<\/strong> participated as member of the jury, chaired by Catalan Michelin-starred chef, <strong>Oriol Castro<\/strong> and including: President of the Executive Board of EUHTStPOL, <strong>Ramon Serra<\/strong>; Board Member of the Acad\u00e8mia Catalana de Gastronomia i Nutrici\u00f3, <strong>Rosa Mayordomo<\/strong>; gastronome and member of <em>5 a taula<\/em> group of the newspaper La Vanguardia, <strong>Josep Vilella<\/strong>; Dean of the University of Girona, <strong>Dr. Quim Salvi i Mas<\/strong>; Vice-Dean of the University of Girona, <strong>Dr. Jos\u00e9 Antonio Donaire<\/strong>; and <strong>Fernando Toda<\/strong>, representing Saber y Sabor magazine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">9 young chefs, including both students from different hospitality schools in Catalonia and young professionals at the beginning of their careers took part in the competition and tried to win the jury\u2019s hearts by proposing innovative versions of traditional recipes from Catalan cuisine elaborated with genuine, seasonal products from the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A concept that goes hand in hand with the European Young Chef Award\u2019s philosophy and aims: to <strong>promote innovations on traditional cuisine<\/strong>; to <strong>highlight sustainable food cultures<\/strong>; and, to <strong>create future chef ambassadors for the regions and local food products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides Eric D\u00edaz, celebrated as overall winner of the contest, the jury also awarded Jos\u00e9 Cuesta, from The One Barcelona hotel with the prize for the Best Skill and Elaboration Technique; Melvin Alvarado, from EUHTStPOL, with the award for Creativity; and Daniel Mart\u00ednez, from EHTB Barcelona for the Best Presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chef <strong>Oriol Castro<\/strong> congratulated all the participants for their hard work and the excellent skills that they demonstrated, encouraging them to be confident in their capacities and to continue to pursue their aspirations to become professional chefs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mayoress of the Municipality of Sant Pol de Mar, <strong>Montserrat Garrido<\/strong> concluded the event stating that all the young chefs could consider themselves as winners and inviting them to continue to take pleasure in their job. She recognised it is a hard profession and wished participants the best for their future careers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Young Chef Award 2018, organised by IGCAT and hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gmit.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology<\/a> (GMIT), will be held on 25-26 November 2018 in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galwaygastronomy.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galway-West of Ireland, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2018<\/a>.
