One of the most noteworthy of those attractions is the beautifully restored historic city center of Sibiu.<\/p>\n<p>The region of the same name, which for hundreds of years was home to a large ethnic German\u00a0population, also offers picturesque countryside villages and hiking trails that meander through pristine nature.\u00a0Add to that health spas, salt lakes\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-funds-spent-on-brutal-revamp-of-romanias-saxon-churches\/a-18668690\">fortified medieval churches<\/a>. And not least, of course, there is the food \u2014\u00a0still prepared in the traditional manner\u00a0and the basis of a diverse regional cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThis year, all roads lead to Sibiu,\u00bb says an exuberant Alin Chipaila, head of the local tourism association. And indeed, in 2019\u00a0Sibiu is one of two featured \u00abEuropean Regions of Gastronomy\u00bb as chosen by the Barcelona-based international\u00a0<a class=\"icon external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">culture and tourism\u00a0non-profit IGCAT<\/a>.
