{"id":19455,"date":"2019-09-19T21:39:31","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T19:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/?p=19455"},"modified":"2021-01-05T16:40:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T15:40:42","slug":"scientists-set-out-how-to-halve-greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/es\/scientists-set-out-how-to-halve-greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists set out how to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greenhouse gas emissions could be halved in the next decade if a small number of current technologies and behavioural trends are ramped up and adopted more widely,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/exponentialroadmap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">researchers have found<\/a>, saying strong civil society movements are needed to drive such change.<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/sep\/12\/deforestation-world-losing-area-forest-size-of-uk-each-year-report-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">deforestation<\/a>\u00a0and improving land management could reduce emissions by the equivalent of about 9bn tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by 2030, according to the report, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/sep\/16\/1m-a-minute-the-farming-subsidies-destroying-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">contradictory subsidies<\/a>, poor planning and vested interests could stop this from happening.<\/p>\n<p>Key to any transition will be the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/video\/2019\/sep\/13\/die-in-extinction-rebellion-london-fashion-week-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">growing social movements<\/a>\u00a0that are pressing for urgent action on climate breakdown. By driving behavioural change, such as moving away from the overconsumption of meat and putting pressure on governments and companies, civil movements have the power to drive the transformation needed in the next decade, say the report\u2019s authors.<\/p>\n<p>The experts identified 36 developments that would produce the emission cuts needed, from renewable energy to changes in food production, the design of cities, and international transport, such as shipping. All of them are judged possible to achieve by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Social movements will be a top priority because consumers can put pressure on the companies whose goods they buy, and public support makes it possible for political leaders to adopt bolder policies.
