Under the theme Urban and Rural<\/strong>, the 1st EUREGA Interregional Knowledge Exchange visit<\/strong> took place in Sibiu, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2019<\/strong>, on 11-14 February 2019.<\/p>\n

Hosted by Sibiu County Council<\/strong>, the meeting aimed to share knowledge, expertise and good practices among the partners that support a re-connection between the urban and rural settings in the area of food.<\/p>\n

Interesting case studies<\/strong> from the regions involved included among others: DM Natural Farming<\/strong> (South Aegean), the first farm of natural cultivation of aromatic and medicinal herbs in the island of Rhodes; Welcome to the farm<\/strong> (Catalonia), an initiative encouraging urban dwellers to visit Catalonia\u2019s farms and involving restaurants and accommodation structures in the countryside; and REKO B2C<\/strong> (Kuopio) that facilitates consumers to buy local products directly from local producers through Facebook.<\/p>\n

The meeting gathered representatives from all the 9 European partners involved in the project who had the chance to experience first-hand some of the initiatives developed in Sibiu to strengthen the link between the city and the countryside. Among them: APILIFE<\/strong>, that promotes awareness of the importance of bee products for health and nutrition; Association Hosman Durabil<\/strong>, that\u00a0works on innovation in rural development to support local communities in the H\u00e2rtibaciului Valley; and Karpaten Meat Farm<\/strong>, producing high-quality meat according to sustainability principles.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0EUREGA project<\/a>\u00a0(EUropean REgions of GAstronomy building resilience and creating economic growth<\/em>) is funded by the\u00a0Interreg Europe<\/strong>\u00a0programme. It has been developed by a consortium including\u00a0six awarded European Regions of Gastronomy<\/strong>\u00a0and building on their experience \u201cto have food, food habits and gastronomy included and recognised in\u00a0EU, regional and national strategies and policies<\/strong>\u00a0both as a cultural asset and strong element in regional cultural identity and as a necessary tool to boost\u00a0sustainable products and services<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 9 partners involved the Eurega project are: the\u00a0Municipality of \u2018s-Hertogenbosch<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Province of Noord-Brabant<\/strong>\u00a0(North Brabant<\/a>, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2018 \u2013 Netherlands); the\u00a0Northern and Western Regional Assembly<\/strong>\u00a0(Galway-West of Ireland<\/a>, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2018 \u2013 Ireland);\u00a0Sibiu County Council<\/strong>\u00a0(Sibiu<\/a>, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2019 \u2013 Romania); the\u00a0Development Agency of South Aegean Region \u2013 READ S.A.<\/strong>\u00a0(South Aegean<\/a>, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2019 \u2013 Greece);\u00a0ProAgria Pohjois-Savo<\/strong>\u00a0(Kuopio<\/a>, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2020 \u2013 Finland);\u00a0PRODECA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Government of Catalonia (Catalonia<\/a>, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2016);\u00a0Hajd\u00fa-Bihar County Government<\/strong>\u00a0(Hungary); and\u00a0IGCAT<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0Advisory Partner<\/a>\u00a0of EUREGA, offering expert advice to help the regions involved work on their challenges and objectives, and is in charge of monitoring and evaluating the project\u2019s results.<\/p>\n

About the European Region of Gastronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Candidate and awarded Regions of Gastronomy<\/a>\u00a0from Europe, guided by\u00a0IGCAT<\/a>, are working together to raise awareness about the importance of their cultural and food uniqueness and share the long-term aim to: promote a better quality of life in European regions; highlight distinctive food cultures; educate for better health and sustainability; nurture creativity; improve tourism standards; and stimulate gastronomic innovation.<\/p>\n

About IGCAT<\/strong><\/p>\n

IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0aims to\u00a0empower local communities<\/strong>\u00a0by raising awareness of the importance to safeguard and promote distinct food, culture, arts and sustainable tourism assets. This is essential to balance against globalised food trends that are impacting on our planet, health and local economies.<\/p>\n

IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0is a non-profit institute established in 2012, working with regional stakeholder consortiums in the fields of gastronomy, culture, arts and tourism. It counts on the expertise of a worldwide\u00a0network of experts<\/a>\u00a0and works in partnership with specialised intergovernmental organisations.<\/p>\n

IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0provides the\u00a0Region of Gastronomy Award<\/a>\u00a0and is the official secretariat for the\u00a0European Region of Gastronomy Platform<\/a>.
