It predicts a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insight.wfp.org\/covid-19-will-almost-double-people-in-acute-hunger-by-end-of-2020-59df0c4a8072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doubling of the number of people going hungry<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 more than half of them in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the global food system has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2020\/05\/09\/the-global-food-supply-chain-is-passing-a-severe-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proven to be resilient<\/a>\u00a0to the COVID-19 pandemic. Food is still being produced, processed and distributed. Unfortunately, the system\u2019s underlying injustices and inequities continue too. Around 1.58 billion people globally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/langlo\/article\/PIIS2214-109X(19)30447-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can\u2019t afford healthy diets.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each crisis tends to be met with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-020-0085-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">response<\/a>\u00a0to mitigate the harm, but the system always seems to return to its earlier undesirable state.<\/p>\n<p>The shock set off by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/africa\/covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0is likely to be different. That\u2019s because it is causing simultaneous and synchronised system failures that will erode economic opportunities now and potentially for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also an opportunity for a different kind of recovery. With less inertia resulting in a return to the previous state, alternative scenarios become plausible.<\/p>\n<p>Going back to \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d investments in agriculture and food systems could reproduce those systems\u2019 inequities.
