The\u00a0Opening Ceremony took place on 11 September 2020 with a special focus on nature, healthy food and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Kuopio\u2019s programme aims to favour <strong>sustainable development<\/strong> based on <strong>cross-sectoral cooperation<\/strong> among local stakeholders and their active engagement in the development of an <strong>innovative tourist offer<\/strong> that integrates <strong>wellness<\/strong> with local <strong>gastronomy<\/strong> and <strong>culture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted at Kuopion Saana building, the ceremony was opened by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/team\/ilona-sares\/\">Ilona Sares<\/a>, International Executive Director, Rural Women\u2019s Advisory Organisation &amp; ProAgria Eastern Finland and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/team\/antti-iire-finland\/\">Antti Iire<\/a>, Manager Research and Development, Savonia University of Applied Sciences, both IGCAT Experts and representatives of two of the founding stakeholders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/kuopio-2020-2021\/\">Kuopio, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2020-2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moderated by <strong>Tiina Naumanen<\/strong> and <strong>Olavi Rytk\u00f6nen<\/strong>, the event included interventions by\u00a0<strong>Katri Kostamo<\/strong>, Chief Executive Officer, ProAgria Eastern Finland;\u00a0<strong>Pekka V\u00e4h\u00e4kangas<\/strong>, Deputy Major, City of Kuopio;\u00a0<strong>Satu Vehre\u00e4vesa<\/strong>, Director of Regional Development, Regional Council of North Savo;\u00a0<strong>Pasi Patrikainen<\/strong>, Director General, Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in North Savo.<\/p>\n<p>The Opening Ceremony was streamed live to international audience participation and included a video message of support from IGCAT President, <a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/team\/dr-diane-dodd\/\">Dr. Diane Dodd<\/a> and representatives of the other awarded European Regions of Gastronomy. Unable to attend the event due to the travel restrictions imposed by Covid-19, colleagues from the European Regions of Gastronomy Platform applauded Kuopio\u2019s efforts to celebrate their programme despite the challenging circumstances, and wished the region a very successful title year and promising to visit soon.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony concluded the <strong>7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Annual IGCAT Experts\u2019 Meeting<\/strong>, a two-day event organised under the theme <strong><em>Food, Well-being and Wellness Tourism<\/em><\/strong>, and included the announcement of the winners of the <strong>1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0European Food Gift Challenge<\/strong>, held in Kuopio on 10 September, and of the <strong>Food Film Menu 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the World Regions of Gastronomy\u00a0Platform\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/world-regions-of-gastronomy-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Candidate and awarded World Regions of Gastronomy<\/a>, guided by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IGCAT<\/a>, are working together to raise awareness about the importance of their cultural and food uniqueness; stimulate creativity and gastronomic innovation; educate for better nutrition; improve sustainable tourism standards; highlight distinctive food cultures; and strengthen community well-being.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About IGCAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0aims to<strong>\u00a0empower local communities<\/strong>\u00a0by raising awareness of the importance to safeguard and promote distinct food, culture, arts and sustainable tourism assets. This is essential to balance against globalised food trends that are impacting on our planet, health and local economies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0is a non-profit institute established in 2012, working with regional stakeholder consortiums in the fields of gastronomy, culture, arts and tourism.
