Now, a discount retailer in Germany is showing the \u201ctrue cost\u201d of foods as calculated by a scientific study as a part of its sustainability initiative to inform consumers of the impact of their purchases.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study commissioned by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penny.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Penny<\/a>, a discount retailer under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewe-group.com\/de\/startseite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rewe Group<\/a>, one of Germany\u2019s largest retail and tourism corporations, researchers from the University of Augsburg found that meat and dairy products should be priced significantly higher when the hidden environmental cost is considered. The scientists considered factors such as\u00a0<strong>greenhouse gas emissions, the impact of fertiliser use and energy consumption in the production process.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to their calculations, minced meat should be nearly three times more expensive, while the price of cow\u2019s milk and Gouda cheese should be doubled.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, environmental costs are not reflected in food prices.
