On Wednesday 21 June, IGCAT participated to a meeting organised by\u00a0EcoRegi\u00f3 Catalunya<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Municipality of Celr\u00e0\u00a0<\/strong>(Girona) at the Centre de Promoci\u00f3 econ\u00f2mica in Celr\u00e0, to celebrate the approval of the\u00a0MicroEcoRegion Ter Gavarres<\/strong>\u00a0project.<\/p>\n

After attending the meeting of EcoRegi\u00f3 Catalunya Steering Committee in the morning, where possible opportunities for collaboration were explored, IGCAT was invited to the presentation of the MicroEcoRegion Ter Gavarres, held by Director of EcoRegi\u00f3 Catalunya and President of DynamisLab,\u00a0Oriol Costa Lechuga<\/strong>. The event gathered producers and other stakeholders from the region, offering them a networking opportunity to collect idea on possible actions for the development of the initiative.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0MicroEcoRegion Ter Gavarres<\/a>\u00a0project gathers ten municipalities in the Ter Gavarres area (Catalonia, Spain), led by the Municipality of Celr\u00e0 with the support of the Provincial Government of Girona, and aims to link local agriculture and gastronomy, capitalising on the natural and cultural heritage of the region. Its main goal is to boost sustainable regional development by generating employment and synergies in the organic food sector of the area. By favouring the creation of innovative zero-Km products and the recovery of local agricultural land in disuse, the project proposes to develop a Ter-Gavarres brand.<\/p>\n

EcoRegi\u00f3 Catalunya<\/a>\u00a0supports the creation of micro-EcoRegions as economic communities \u201cfor organic food.\u201d By means of micro-capital contribution, \u201cfarmers, local citizens, governments and universities promote the ecological enterprises of their own region\u201d and, as shareholders, contribute to boost regional economy.<\/p>\n

Developed following the successful model of\u00a0Regionalwert AG<\/a>, in Freiburg (Germany), where 700 citizens invested 4 million Euro, EcoRegi\u00f3 Catalunya aims to engage the whole \u201cvalue chain of production, commercialisation, distribution and services\u201d related to local, organic food to generate \u201ceconomic, social and environmental benefits\u201d for the micro-regions. \u201cThis balanced return enables small and medium sized farms and producers to survive in a highly competitive market, while allowing local supply chains and synergies to strengthen the region\u2019s sustainable values,\u201d as well as \u201cconsumers to enjoy ecological food.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0EcoRegi\u00f3 Catalunya Implementation Guide<\/a>\u00a0(available in Spanish), the main goals of a micro-ecoregion are to enhance dissemination of organic food; contribute to regional economic revitalisation by generating employment; boost regional food sovereignty; develop added value chains connecting farms, manufacturers, shops and distributors; invest in health and social impact; and generate positive environmental, social and economic externalities.<\/p>\n

DynamisLab<\/a>\u00a0is the organisation in charge of the implementation of the EcoRegi\u00f3 initiative in Spain. It provides expertise to develop projects concerning local economy and organic agriculture, and fostering environmental, social and economic sustainability.<\/p>\n

About IGCAT<\/strong><\/p>\n
