Cosme, in Vila Nova de Famalic\u00e3o (Braga, Portugal), elaborated an innovative and surprising version of the <em>Arroz de Vinha d\u2019Alhos<\/em>, a typical dish from Minho region that earned her the first prize at the <strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> Minho Young Chef Awards<\/strong>. The competition was held at <strong>AESAcademy school<\/strong> in Vila Nova de Famalic\u00e3o, on 25 May 2018, and gathered 11 participants from different culinary schools in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The recipe, based on rice cooked in a mixture of water, stewed entrecote and red wine, is \u201ca tribute\u201d Beatriz explained, that was inspired by her grandmother and the <em>fado<\/em>\u2019s nights at her home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crucial elements for her crowning by the jury were the use of local seasonal products and her \u201ccourage in choosing and combining these ingredients\u201d as reported by renowned Portuguese chef and owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferrugem.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ferrugem<\/em><\/a> restaurant in Vila Nova de Famalic\u00e3o, <strong>Renato Cunha<\/strong> selected as official <strong>Ambassador of the Minho Young Chef Awards<\/strong> and jury member for the competition. \u201cIt\u2019s a true dish from Minho, full of flavour and character\u201d he added, pointing out that \u201call the plates presented were very good and it hasn\u2019t been easy to choose the first place. But\u201d Beatriz\u2019s dish \u201crepresents exactly the region\u2019s cuisine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President of IGCAT, <strong>Dr. Diane Dodd<\/strong> joined the jury panel that elected Beatriz as Minho Young Chef for 2018 and that furthermore included: chef at <a href=\"https:\/\/a-cozinha.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Cozinha<\/em><\/a> restaurant, <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Loureiro<\/strong>; <strong>Bruno Almeida<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/portal.vinhoverde.pt\/pt\/homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Comiss\u00e3o de Viticultura da Regi\u00e3o dos Vinhos Verdes<\/em><\/a> (Commission for Viticulture of the Region of Vinhos Verdes); <strong>Olga Matos<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/internacional.ipvc.pt\/en\/node\/17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo<\/a> (IPVC); and Professor at IPVC and IGCAT Expert, <a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/team\/carlos-fernandes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Fernandes<\/a>, representing in this occasion the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Confraria-Gastr%C3%B3nomos-do-Minho-333522573662881\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Confraria dos Gastr\u00f3nomos do Minho<\/em><\/a> (Order of the Gastronomes of Minho).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The jury rewarded Beatriz\u2019s commitment to the competition and hard training to elaborate a winning dish. \u201cI\u2019ve been dining Arroz de Vinha d\u2019Alhos every single day\u201d said Beatriz, who decided to become a chef since she was seven years old.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Lu\u00eds Leite<\/strong>, from Amar Terra Verde\u2019s school and <strong>Andr\u00e9 Freire<\/strong>, from ETAP school, won second and third prize respectively, both presenting interesting dishes inspired by the local tradition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beatriz Costa will join finalists from all the European Regions of Gastronomy in the <strong>European Young Chef Award 2018<\/strong>, that will take place in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galwaygastronomy.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galway-West of Ireland, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2018<\/a>, on <strong>25-27 November<\/strong>. About her participation in the European contest, she commented \u201cI want to show that Minho region has good dishes. Representing my region is a dream. I\u2019m very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Organised during the <a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/consolidating-visions-for-a-better-future-igcat-and-the-european-region-of-gastronomy-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5<sup>th<\/sup> IGCAT Annual Experts Meeting and 1<sup>st<\/sup> International Congress of Gastronomy and Cultural Heritage<\/a>, 23-26 May 2018, the Minho Young Chef Awards represented an opportunity to give visibility to the regional gastronomy. \u201cThe bet on the training of young chefs and the creation of events such as the Minho Young Chef Award are points that help give more quality to local cuisine\u201d explained Carlos Fernandes, initiator of Minho\u2019s candidature for the European Region of Gastronomy title.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minhoin.com\/noticias\/detalhes.php?id=649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minho Young Chef Awards<\/a> was organised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minhoin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consortium Minho IN<\/a>, gathering the three Intermunicipal Communities of Alto Minho, C\u00e1vado and Ave, with the support of <strong>IGCAT<\/strong> and the <strong>European Region of Gastronomy Platform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About the European Region of Gastronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Region of Gastronomy\u00a0Platform<\/a>\u00a0aims to contribute to better quality of life in European regions, by highlighting distinctive food cultures, educating for better health and sustainability and stimulating gastronomic innovation.
