Creativity and innovation lie at the heart of\u00a0North Brabant<\/strong>\u2019s programme as\u00a0European Region of Gastronomy 2018<\/a>, as highlighted by\u00a0Buenavida<\/a>, the monthly magazine on health and wellbeing issued by the Spanish newspaper\u00a0El Pa\u00eds<\/strong>, that published an article about the region\u2019s capital \u2018s-Hertogenbosch titled\u00a0La Ciudad Laboratorio<\/em>\u00a0(The Lab City).<\/p>\n

Author of the article, Juan Pelegr\u00edn underlines the region\u2019s efforts to produce\u00a0smart food<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0through community working and more sustainable production and consumption systems, and presents some local initiatives that have been developed in the framework of the European Region of Gastronomy title year.<\/p>\n

Among them, the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0edition of the\u00a0City Food & Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0described as one of the flagship actions in the region\u2019s programme, encompassing film projections, community activities and conferences related to food topics, organised in the Verkadefabriek<\/a>, a former biscuit factory recreated as a cultural centre.<\/p>\n

Throughout their title year, North Brabant has furthermore programmed ten monthly thematic initiatives, symbolically referred to as\u00a0Kitchens of Brabant<\/em><\/strong>, aimed at elaborating innovative solutions throughout the food value chain. The ten initiatives were selected out of 100 ideas submitted by a plurality of local actors, demonstrating a strong engagement of the local community.<\/p>\n

As reported by Buenavida, North Brabant\u2019s programme opened in March 2018 with the\u00a0Month of Food Waste<\/strong>, involving both consumers and businesses in a discussion focused on preventing and reducing food waste and improving recycling processes. Among the participating businesses, the magazine highlights\u00a0Botanic ites<\/strong>, which transforms food waste into new, appetising food products.<\/p>\n

October has been selected as the\u00a0Month of #DataFood<\/strong>\u00a0and is about seizing new data-driven business opportunities and innovations in Brabant\u2019s agrifood sector for a more rational use of food. Pelegr\u00edn further reports that, in the long run, application of data science, as currently researched in North Brabant, could help forecast alerts in areas affected by severe food issues.<\/p>\n

Technology and innovation are combined in North Brabant with an endeavour to\u00a0reinforce local community\u2019s pride<\/strong>\u00a0in their food tradition and quality food produce. \u201cWe love eating and producing food. We do it passionately and with a strong desire to innovate, not only because we believe it is viable, but also vital\u201d said\u00a0Lian Duif<\/strong>, Programme Manager of We Are Food<\/a>, as reported by Buenavida.\u00a0We Are Food Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0has been created as part of the European Region of Gastronomy title year and researches food habits of the population of North Brabant.<\/p>\n

North Brabant<\/strong>\u00a0has been awarded\u00a0European Region of Gastronomy 2018<\/strong>\u00a0together with\u00a0Galway-West of Ireland<\/a>\u00a0and is part of the European Region of Gastronomy Platform which includes today 12 awarded regions from all over Europe.<\/p>\n
