However, the need is increasingly felt for <strong>new policy frameworks<\/strong> that highlight the importance of local gastronomy as a powerful resource to enhance healthy living.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by <strong>ProAgria Pohjois-Savo<\/strong>, the <strong>3rd Interregional Knowledge Exchange visit<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interregeurope.eu\/eurega\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EUREGA Interreg Europe project<\/a> aimed at collecting and disseminating good practises from the involved partners in the area of <strong>Gastronomy and Health<\/strong> to ultimately influence related local, regional and national policies and boost local sustainable development models.<\/p>\n<p>Stakeholders from eight European regions, including six awarded <strong>European Regions of Gastronomy<\/strong>, gathered in Kuopio (Finland) on 18-20 June 2019 to present their most outstanding initiatives and to learn about\u00a0Kuopio region\u2019s actions in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Nordic Diet<\/strong>, based on wholegrain products, wild berries and freshwater fish, and the <strong>Finnish free school lunch<\/strong>, identified as Kuopio\u2019s strengths, were among the topics presented to the partners. Furthermore, the hosts illustrated interesting local case studies, including the research on well-being as a new food trend conducted by the <strong>Future Food Unit of Savonia University of Applied Sciences<\/strong> and the ongoing investigation and cultivation of the Arctic Bramble (<strong>University of Eastern Finland<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Many of the good practices discussed during the meeting have been developed by regions as part of their European Region of Gastronomy title programme, such as the <strong>Local Breakfast project<\/strong> in Sibiu, aimed at introducing local healthy products in the breakfast menu of local restaurants and accommodation facilities, and the <strong>Healthy Village<\/strong> in North Brabant that has managed to influence citizens eating habits to prevent nutrition-related diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The EUREGA Interreg Europe project demonstrates how the <strong>European Region of Gastronomy Platform<\/strong> can foster <strong>knowledge-exchange<\/strong> among regions and the creation of <strong>international joint initiatives<\/strong> aimed to boost regional sustainable development and able to raise financial support from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IGCAT<\/strong> is Advisory Partner in the project and provides research and methodology support to partners. The European Regions of Gastronomy involved are: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/catalonia-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catalonia<\/a> (2016), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/galway-west-of-ireland-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galway-West of Ireland<\/a> (2018), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/north-brabant-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Brabant<\/a> (2018), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/sibiu-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sibiu<\/a> (2019), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/south-aegean-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Aegean<\/a> (2019) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/kuopio-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kuopio<\/a> (2020).<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the European Region of Gastronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org\/platform\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1559406695777000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHNMlnxLHzNE8s9UlicmP7Kry3rTA\">Candidate and awarded Regions of Gastronomy<\/a>\u00a0from Europe, guided by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/test-oldwebsite.igcat.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1559406695777000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGyJW2qXirOWYDmQtmNnqEKKDZnyA\">IGCAT<\/a>, are working together to raise awareness about the importance of their cultural and food uniqueness and share the long-term aim to: promote a better quality of life in European regions; highlight distinctive food cultures; educate for better health and sustainability; nurture creativity; improve tourism standards; and stimulate gastronomic innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About IGCAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IGCAT<\/strong>\u00a0aims to<strong>\u00a0empower local communities<\/strong>\u00a0by raising awareness of the importance to safeguard and promote distinct food, culture, arts and sustainable tourism assets.
